Halloween Declutter: Tricks, Treats & Too Much Stuff!
Halloween items are one of those things that can accumulate over time without us even realising it. Here's how to tackle that spooky stash head-on — and make space for the things you genuinely love.
Halloween items are one of those things that can accumulate over time without us even realising it. If you're a sucker for the spooky season, or have kids who love getting involved, then it's time to tackle that Halloween stash head-on!
Every year, the shops encourage us to buy more, more and MORE. And then, just to add insult to injury, they slash the prices the day before Halloween, when we've already bought everything. Frustrating much? But that's another story!
Here's the thing. We start seeing Halloween decorations and paraphernalia in the shops weeks before Halloween is even on our radar. Rather than thinking, "Halloween is just around the corner. Let's get last year's decorations out of storage and see what we've already got," we spot something shiny, spooky or downright adorable and buy it.
After all, we only need a pumpkin carving kit, don't we? Can't remember where last year's is? Never mind, it's only £1!
But then, when we eventually have a clear-out and discover last year's carving kit lurking at the back of a cupboard, what do we do? Get rid of it? Or think, "I'll use that next year" and pop it back into storage?
And so the cycle continues!
First things first: What do you actually use?
Let's be honest. Halloween can be brilliant fun, and we're certainly not here to tell anyone to ditch the spooky season. We're all about making space for the things you genuinely love!
Halloween used to be one of my favourite times of the year. We went all out decorating the house, held parties with gruesome food and greeted trick-or-treaters with spooky faces at the door.
But as my son has grown up, his enthusiasm has waned. I still love greeting the little ones who knock on the door, but these days I'm no longer doing it in full fancy dress and scary make-up. More's the pity!
As a result, many of the decorations I've accumulated over the years have found new homes. And honestly? That's absolutely fine.
So, before you pack everything away for another year, ask yourself a few questions:
- The drinks skull: Do you really need a massive glass skull to serve blackcurrant juice in once a year?
- The baking accessories: Did you actually use that skull-shaped flexible baking tray or those chocolate moulds to make homemade treats?
- The face paint: Are you happy putting two-year-old face paint on your own skin or your children's?
- The costumes: Are you a Halloween enthusiast who dresses up as a different character every year? Brilliant! But could you pass on previous costumes rather than storing them indefinitely?
- The witch hats: Do you really need three different ones?
- The decorations: Are those ghosts and ghouls still looking their best, or are they starting to look a little worse for wear?
And if you're planning to sell costumes or decorations, remember that people need them in advance. Don't leave it until Halloween week and expect a queue of eager buyers!
Where can your unwanted Halloween bits go?
Decluttering doesn't automatically mean throwing everything away. Plenty of items can be passed on to someone else who will enjoy them.
- Charity shops: Good-quality costumes, decorations and accessories may be welcome, but donate early enough for them to sell before Halloween. Check with your local shop first, as not everything can be accepted.
- Schools and community groups: They may appreciate decorations, craft supplies or costumes for Halloween events. Check what they need and get items to them in plenty of time.
- Friends and family: Know someone who loves Halloween as much as you do? They might be delighted with your unwanted spooky stash.
- Selling online: Costumes and decorations in good condition can find new homes, particularly if you list them well ahead of the season.
The aim is to give things a second life wherever possible, rather than letting them sit unused in your cupboards for another year.
Keep the good stuff — but store it properly!
Once you've decided what deserves to stay, make sure it has a proper home.
There's no point spending time decluttering only to shove everything back into random bags, boxes and cupboards where you'll struggle to find it next year.
Try grouping your Halloween items into categories:
- Indoor decorations: Candles, figurines, wall hangings and ornaments.
- Outdoor decorations: Inflatables, lights and garden displays.
- Tableware: Plates, cups, napkins and other party essentials.
- Costumes and accessories: Fancy dress, wigs, hats, masks and props.
- Craft supplies: Pumpkin carving tools, baking accessories, chocolate moulds and Halloween craft materials.
Choose storage boxes that are sturdy, sealable and, ideally, stackable. Clear boxes can be particularly helpful because you can see what's inside, but if you prefer opaque boxes, make sure they're clearly labelled.
You could even use a simple label such as HALLOWEEN — COSTUMES or HALLOWEEN — OUTDOOR DECORATIONS.
The easier it is to find what you need, the less likely you are to buy duplicates next year!
Remember: Decluttering is about making space for what you love
We're not suggesting you give up Halloween, stop decorating your home or deny yourself the occasional spooky bargain.
We're simply encouraging you to pause before buying more.
Take stock of what you already own. Keep the things you love and use. Pass on the items that no longer serve you, and store the rest in a way that makes next year's celebrations easier.
Because the real treat isn't another £1 pumpkin carving kit. It's being able to find the one you've already got!
